‘SCARECROW CITY’ ~ SATURDAY OCTOBER 17th, 2009
BoyScare06Every autumn, an annual time of reflection and gratitude for the harvest, Hallowell, Maine celebrates our community’s own abundance of resources: our rich history and heritage, our creative talents, and the natural beauty and recreational opportunities that surround us.  Come join the celebration and be part of our own tradition!

NOTE: The scarecrow contest is free and open to all—you need not live or work in Hallowell to enter.  Scarecrow entries must be registered to be eligible for prizes. Deadline to register is 5pm Thursday, October 15th. Entry form and info available at various downtown venues including Dom’s Barber Shop, City Hall, Boynton’s, Slates Bakery, and the Harlow Gallery; or online at www.hallowell.org.

Dom’s Barber Shop is the polling place Friday from noon to 7pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm; then voting shifts next door to the Harlow Gallery on Saturday afternoon till 6pm and Sunday from noon to 4pm.  You can also view snapshots of the scarecrows and vote at the Candidates’ Forum at City Hall. Votes will be tallied and winners announced the following week, in all categories— People’s Choice, as well as those judged ‘Best in Show’ and “I Made It Myself’’. Events are free unless otherwise noted.

By noon Friday October 16th: All scarecrow entries must be in place – voting begins.

‘Polls’ open! Bring nickels to vote for your favorite scarecrow at Dom’s Barber Shop—“Scarecrow Central” from noon-7pm Friday, and Saturday from 8-1. Voting then shifts next door to the Harlow Gallery, where the ‘polls’ remain open until 6pm Saturday, and Sunday from noon to 4pm.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 17th

Free cookie and small coffee at Slates Bakery for anyone wearing a Fall Festival shirt who stops by today! Support the Fall Festival by purchasing long sleeved Ts, sweatshirts and baseball caps downtown this weekend.

Photo scavenger hunt continues: see www.hallowell.org or pick up a copy of the 10/16 Capital Weekly for clues & rules. Admire the work-in-progress of ’plein air’ sidewalk artists sketching and painting while you stroll downtown to find those photo scavenger hunt clues, browse the Museum in the Streets, and check out all the scarecrows so you can vote for your favorites (votes cost a nickel apiece— cast as many ballots as you like, all proceeds benefit the Festival).

9am-1pm Hospitality and information at Dom’s Barber Shop— this year’s Fall Festival Headquarters and ‘Scarecrow Central’. Fall Festival buttons, shirts and hats on sale to benefit Celebrating Hallowell and next year’s Fall Festival. Don’t forget to bring nickels to vote for your favorite scarecrows!

10am-2:00pm Open House at the expanded North Bay recycling facility, hosted by Hallowell’s Solid Waste and Recycling Committee. Bring your recyclables along with you to Hallowell’s North Bay in the Public Works garage on Water Street. Community volunteers will provide tours and answer your questions… think green!

10am-2pm Historic Hallowell Project at the Hubbard Free Library on Second St.

Project team members will be on hand to explain about this exciting local history project, funded by a grant from the Maine Historical Society as part of the Maine Community Heritage Project.  Your old photographs, and recollections of important Hallowell people, places and events can become part of an online exhibit at www.mainememory.net. Noon-2pm – Kidspumpkin decorating: Slates Bakery lot [note new location]:  transform a pint-sized pumpkin into a one of a kind work of art. Hands-on fun for youngsters of all ages and their families. (will take place indoors at the Harlow Gallery if weather dictates)

1-6pm Scarecrow voting continues at Harlow Gallery – bring nickels!

3-4pm Candidates’ Forum at City Hall. Sponsored by Row House, this event offers Hallowell residents a chance to become more familiar with another important resource: our candidates for public office!  Hear from mayoral contestants Dot Mithee and Charlotte Warren; and city councilor-at-large candidates Ed Cervone and Christy Cross, in a Q&A forum.

7pm Riverside community bonfire & drumming at the waterfront by the north end of Water Street.  Drummers of all levels are invited to bring your drums and participate!  Featuring a special performance by Hall-Dale Japanese drumming students, who will coach anyone who would like to try the drums afterwards. [weather permitting: bonfire will be postponed to Sunday evening in case of rain or high winds]

7pm ‘Party with the Stars’ – John Meader of Northern Stars Planetarium will offer glimpses of the autumn stars and planets through his high-powered telescopes, on the boardwalk. An unforgettable experience for young and old! [weather permitting]

Concluding Sunday, October 18th:

Last day to enter photo scavenger hunt: see www.hallowell.org or the Capital Weekly for photo clues. Entries must be received at Harlow Gallery by 4pm today. Three winners (chosen randomly from all correct entries) will receive a quart of pure organic Maine maple syrup!

Noon-4pm scarecrow voting continues at Harlow Gallery – last chance to bring your nickels and cast your votes… polls close at 4pm!
