_________________________________________________________________________________________________
Augusta, Maine – The Kennebec Valley Art Association is pleased to present Mapping the Air, a collaborative installation by artists Donna Parkinson of Freeport and Sarah Vosmus of Bowdoin, at the lobby gallery at 45 Memorial Circle in Augusta. On view from November 26th- January 25th 2013, the installation is open 9am-9pm daily, can be viewed from outside the building, and is lit at night. The installation brings together the work of two emerging printmakers whose art, each in its own way, synthesizes intuitive, quick decision-making ideals with organic forms and an environmentally perceptive aesthetic.
Donna Parkinson’s prints are comprised of soft, colorful, natural forms inspired by an affinity for the outdoors and gardening. She often experiments with textured papers and incorporates collected plant material into her monotype printing process.
Sarah Vosmus’s collages, prints and three-dimensional constructions are unique expressions of an interest and exploration of the boundaries between the natural world and work of the hand. Her prints are adaptable, fluid and familiar; bold tangled patterns repeat to create a forward-looking aesthetic that is both abstract and geographically oriented.
Both artists regularly exhibit and share studio space at Circling the Square Fine Art Press in Gardiner, Maine.
The collaboration Mapping the Air was created in a storm of quick intuitive decisions, piles of printed papers and a unique bond of understanding. In homage to the spirit of the Dymaxion map/globe created by Buckminster Fuller, the artists created two and three-dimensional prints with awareness to size, scale and distortion. Mapping the Air explores the artist’s ingrained memory and observations of the natural world, while capturing their reflections. Donna Parkinson’s artistic energy is grounded; she tells a story of our cartographic earth. The prints of Sarah Vosmus are comprised of energy and movement, space and air. This installation is what happens when the two forces collide.
This installation was created in conjunction with the Harlow Gallery’s first exhibition of 2013, “ingrained” featuring works by five printmakers will be on view at the Harlow from January 18th through February 9th, 2013.

Participating homes announced for Art at Home Hallowell tour

Hallowell, Maine -

The Harlow Gallery released a list of art collectors opening their homes in Hallowell on Saturday, September 29th for the second annual Art at Home tour. A unique twist on the usual garden/house tour model, Art at Home offers a self-guided tour of seven residences with private art collections. Ticket holders will enjoy the following collections:

The Mayo Collection

Bruce Mayo’s collection consists of vintage paint by numbers from the 40s 50s and 60s, once a kitschy craft form and now highly collectable. More than 40 pieces of Bruce’s total collection of 300 will be on display. In addition, Bruce’s own art, mixed media watercolor and ink pieces, will be on view.

The McCourtney Collection

“Art fills my soul and inspires me.” — Perry McCourtney.
Perry McCourtney purchased his first “major” piece of art in college, and from there he was hooked! His collection spans 30 years of collecting. It is eclectic, varying from the masters to modern abstracts. In Perry’s opinion, “Art should make you think, make you feel.” Perry has been known to buy art instead of groceries some weeks.

The Murray-Beliveau Collection

Visitors will find a diverse collection of art from around the state and globe, housed in one of Hallowell’s classic historical homes. This collection features subject matter including moose, snow and eggs; chimneys and dragons; bird eyes and park benches, plus “People Pots” and sculpture! The many media represented include photos, oils, gouache, chalk, pottery and more. Cynthia Murray-Beliveau and Severin Beliveau welcome you to come view their treasured collection!

The Ottmann Collection

Connie Ottmann is only the second owner of a classic 1930s cape located on a large, in-town lot in the heart of Hallowell. Her charming and comfortable home features a formal dining room, enclosed porch/studio, and a front-to-back living room with fireplace, arched entry, and French doors, a perfect backdrop for Connie’s own paintings and hand-glazed pottery, as well as other local artists’ paintings and three-dimensional work. Enjoy the grounds and wood carvings as well!

The Shed and Davis Collection

Sarah Shed and Joel Davis have lived at 72 Middle Street since 1979 and have been gradually filling the house with art by friends, Hallowell artists, Maine artists, a few nationally recognized artists, and some work acquired in travels to faraway places. The pieces have come into their lives in a variety of ways; serendipity and auctions in support of good causes being the most common.

The Stearns and Brown Collection

Alan Stearns and Austin Brown renovated and expanded a small 1830s Greek revival cape purchased by them in 1998. Their art collection includes local painters Christopher Cart, Jennifer Cart, Sandra Dunn, Bruce Habowski, Mark Poirier, Alesia Norling and sculptor Laurie Stearns (Alan’s sister). The living room is dominated by Bas-Relief rubbings from temples at Angkor Wat in Cambodia, framed locally by Jennifer Cart. Wood prints from Portland’s Marjorie M. Block are also on display.

The Zardus Collection

Derek and Teresa Zardus moved to Hallowell approximately 7 years ago, purchasing their home, “Hallows Edge”, located at the edge of Hallowell. Their house alone has much character with its rich jewel toned walls and eclectic décor. They fell in love with many area artists and started collecting work by some of their favorites, including Judith Schuppien, Kay Morris, Bill Haley, Cynthia Ahlstrin, Steve Plumer and Petrea Noyes. Teresa’s personal photography and acrylic abstract artwork by Zardus Art is also displayed throughout their home.

The participating homes, all in or near downtown Hallowell, were selected to showcase not only their residents’ art collections, but also their relationships with their art, and the way art and living space are integrated in their personal spaces. Ticket holders will enjoy the opportunity to view an eclectic variety of art ranging from a Picasso to a vintage paint-by-number collection, with a strong showing of exceptional Maine artists.

Of the 2011 tour Hallowell resident Dawn Gallagher said, “[Art at Home] goes beyond art on view at a gallery or in a museum. Art is transformed within the context of a home, and it transforms the home as well. The room itself becomes an art composition, reflecting who lives there.”

The Harlow Gallery will provide ticket holders with a detailed program guide including a map, and complete information on the individual collections. Volunteer docents will be present at each site to answer questions and give directions. “Art at Home” ticket holders will be encouraged to explore Hallowell’s many fine dining and shopping establishments – many Hallowell business will be offering promotional discounts to ticket holders all day long, and these will be listed in the program guide. In addition, ticket holders will be entered in a random prize drawing for one of three original pieces of artwork on the day of the event. The prize drawing will take place at a reception at Easy Street Lounge at 7 Front Street in Hallowell at 2:30 pm. Please note that ticketholders must be present to win!

Ticket prices are $25 in advance or $30 the day of the event. To purchase tickets, or for more information, please contact the Harlow Gallery at 622-3813 or email kvaa@harlowgallery.org

Art at Home is being sponsored by realtor Perry McCourtney of Hallowell and by our media sponsor, the Kennebec Journal. PRINTING MONOTYPES USING A GELATIN PLATE with Claudia Brahms and Margo Ogden

Hallowell, Maine: On Saturday, October 20 local artists Claudia Brahms and Margo Ogden will teach a printmaking workshop at the Harlow Gallery at 160 Water Street in Hallowell. The workshop time is from 10 am – 3 pm and the cost is $40 for members of the Kennebec Valley Art Association or $45 for non-members, plus a $15 materials fee. To register for the workshop contact the Harlow Gallery at 207.622.3813 or email kvaa@harlowgallery.org.

Participants will learn how to transfer painted images onto paper using a non-toxic household item as a printing press. Gelatin provides an excellent surface for printmaking that is simple and provides for experimentation and unusual effects. This is a great class for art educators, emerging or established artists. Open to all levels of experience, you’ll be printing immediately and discovering the many ways to make beautiful marks on paper. We’ll wind down with a demonstration on how to “pour” a gelatin plate so you can continue from home.

Paper, paints, stencils, and all the tools needed to participate will be provided, but if you have favorite supplies that you want to experiment with please bring them. That could be paper, paints (water soluble), fun items that can make stamps, stencils, sponges, paint brushes, brayers….anything your imagination wants to explore. Participants should bring a bag lunch and/or snacks.
